Lead fractionation in soil as affected by organic and inorganic amendments

The Pb fractionation in the sewage sludge and cow manure before and after removal of organic carbon, reducible Fe, iron oxide and Pb(NO3)2 salt was determined by a sequential extraction method. Despite cow manure and sewage sludge had high level of organic carbon (54 and 31%, respectively), most of the Pb in these amendments was found in the inorganic (oxide) fraction.

After organic carbon removal, the Pb was distributed in the residual form for the sewage sludge, and oxide and carbonate forms for the manure. Removal of the reducible Fe caused Pb distribution in the carbonate, and carbonate and residual fractions in the manure and sludge, respectively. Removing iron oxide from the sludge and manure distributed the Pb in the carbonate fraction. Organic carbon removal increased the mobility factor of Pb in cow manure by 14% . The results showed that inorganic fractions play an important role in distribution and adsorption capacity of Pb in soil.

The influence of soil to solution ratio on cadmium removal from soils using anionic surfactants

The effectiveness of cadmium removal from soils by two anionic surfactants at different soil/solution ratio (m/V) was investigated. At critical micelle concentration (CMC) Rosulfan L reduced surface tension of water more sufficiently than ABS Na/S. In soil/surfactant systems CMC values clearly increased in comparison with fresh solutions, indicating surfactants sorption.

Der Austausch kontaminierten Bodens in der grundwassergesättigten Zone stellt hohe Ansprüche an den Tiefbau sowie den Arbeits- und Immissionsschutz. In den letzten Jahren werden zunehmend überschnittene Großlochbohrungen als Sanierungsverfahren angewendet, da diese kleinräumigen Verfahren bis in größere Tiefen anwendbar sind, ohne umfangreiche Verbauarbeiten oder Grundwasserabsenkungen vornehmen zu müssen. Anhand einer erfolgreichen Anwendung dieser Sanierungsmethode auf dem Grundstück einer ehemaligen chemischen Reinigung in Berlin werden Planung und Ausführung dieser Methode erläutert.

Content of macroelements in Avena sativa L., Brassica napus var. oleifera and Lupinus luteus L. after contamination of soil by copper and zinc

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of copper and zinc contamination on macroelements content in plants. Research was located on two alkaline soils which in natural conditions were formed with loamy sand and sandy loam. The soil was contaminated with copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) at the following rates: 0, 150 and 450 mg/kg of soil.

Fumarolic alteration products at Sousaki (Greece): occurrence and environmental impact

Fumarolic alteration crusts and efflorescences have been sampled at the Sousaki solfataric field. Samples have been analysed for mineralogical (XRD) and chemical composition (HNO3 digestion and leaching with distilled water). Results show that mineralogical and chemical compositions (major, minor and trace metals) are controlled by microenvironmental conditions.

Analysis of the regional-scale influence of agricultural ecosystem parameters on zinc concentrations of soil and rice grains using regression methods

We investigated the influence of various metrical and categorical parameters characterizing soil, climate, parent material, physiography and agricultural management on soil and rice grain Zn concentrations in two provinces of Central Iran. Total soil Zn was found to be a function of parent material, physiographic unit, crop rotation system, total soil P concentration and soil clay content. Except for soil CaCO3 and OC the parameters considered in our analysis, however, had no strong effect on grain Zn concentrations. The analysis showed that generally available information such as basic soil properties, parent material and crop rotation system can be very helpful in predicting the Zn status of agricultural soils on a regional scale, while it helped much less in predicting grain Zn concentrations in rice.
