State-of-the-art and future perspectives in textile recycling

Today, the blending of materials within textiles is an asset in the design of protective clothing and various technical applications, but material mixes and blends also found their way into retail trade. The rise in end-of-life items is thus putting pressure on waste management to develop suitable recycling processes. Still, in the textile sector, waste prevention claimed by policy seems to be a pious wish.

The shift in purpose of textiles from a mere need towards fashion goods has led to an increasing amount of end-of-life textile items. Where separate collection is in place, one-half of the gathered items are shipped abroad. 1/5th of the other part is reused for cleaning and up to 10 % are incinerated or disposed of. For the remaining fraction, three main recycling routes are used to 1) reclaim individual fibres, 2) melt or dissolve the fibre polymer, or 3) depolymerise textiles and use the monomers. The maturing of new techniques, such as bio-catalysis, pushes the limits and sequential processes are suggested for multi-material textile recycling. However, separate collection and sorting are essential, yet not in place largely. The pressure on textile waste management for suitable treatment is high, let alone recent legal trends.

Hungarian municipal solid wastes (MSW) management has developed tremendously over the past 15 years. More than 3,000 landfills and dumps had been closed, just to mention one improvement. However, still, lots of work is necessary to accomplish the EU’s ambitious aim of decreasing landfilling and increasing recycling and composting.

Gegenwärtig stellen mehrere öffentlich-rechtliche Entsorgungsträger Überlegungen an, in ihrem Einzugsgebiet eine kommunale Wertstofftonne einzuführen, in der neben stoffgleichen Nicht-Verpackungsabfällen und sonstigen Wertstoffen auch Verpackungsabfälle erfasst werden können. Ob und inwieweit ein solches Vorhaben rechtlich zulässig ist, wird im Folgenden unter abfallrechtlichen, insbesondere verpackungsrechtlichen Gesichtspunkten beleuchtet.
