Within the framework of a joint project a filter system was developed for the combined separation of fine dust and gaseous acidifying pollutants for biomass combustion processes by the Institute for Particle Processing Technology (University of Paderborn), the company Hellmich GmbH and Co. KG and the DBFZ German Biomass Research Centre, non-profit LLC
For this purpose, initially examinations were conducted, at laboratory and pilot plant level, with two precoating materials (calcium hydroxide and sodiumhydrogen carbonate), which are already used in industrial processes. Both precoatingmaterials proved to be suitable for the envisaged implementation. The scale-up towards a real plant was successfully effectuated. The verification was ensued with a field testingplant, which was fired with straw pellets and used calcium hydroxide as precoatingmaterial. Additionally experiments were conducted at pilot-plant level, to partially substitute fresh precoating material with the ashes of rice husks.

The potential of insects in waste management – an introduction to possible applications
© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2020)
In order to remain competitive for achieving a circular economy we need to consider even more alternative pathways to close the loop for material and waste streams down to a nutritional level. A sustainable and value adding strategy is the intensified rearing and use of insects, in particular the use of edible species as human food and animal feed.
Reporting of food waste in the EU – Results of current estimates in Germany

In February 2019, the German Federal Cabinet adopted the 'National Strategy for Reducing Food Waste', setting a framework for the future direction of this initiative. Among other things, it stipulated that an inter-ministerial "Indicator 12.3 Working Group" should prepare the data bases and methods for nationwide balancing of food waste generation (baseline). Based on existing 2015 data, this status quo analysis will be used as a starting point to agree on milestones for the respective sectors.
Life cycle assessment of waste wood used for energy production – Methodology and case studies
© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2020)
To assess the sustainability along the whole value chain, life cycle-based methodologies have been developed over the last years. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) considers environmental impacts along supply chains, from extraction of raw materials to end-of-life of products (ASI 2006). The aim of this paper is to describe the use of LCA to assess the environmental impacts of the use of waste wood for energy production. Important methodological aspects on the use of LCA for the assessment of waste wood are presented using two different case studies from the H2020 projects STORY (Added value of STOrage in distribution sYstems) and TORERO (TORefying wood with Ethanol as a Renewable Output: large-scale demonstration).
